The legendary tennis player will remain an unstoppable force in her future endeavours off the court

Serena Williams is perhaps one of the biggest superstars tennis has ever seen. The California native is the champion of 23 Grand Slam titles, the founder of a sustainable clothing line, and an activist in her own right. However, the sports icon has announced that she’s retiring her crown – but not the traditional way.

According to Harper’s Bazaar US, the star has expressed her dislike for the word “retirement” – considering the next chapter of her life to be more of an “evolution”, with her focus to now be towards growing her family, and devoting time to other hobbies that she loves.

What’s Next For Serena?

Serena’s varied interests off the court are well-documented. The tennis legend is known for her bold style statements, and has led multiple endeavours in fashion. In 2019, Serena launched her own sustainable athleisure line, S by Serena, whose inspiration she took from her own experiences with the lack of inclusivity in sportswear according to Bustle. Serena was also appointed on the board of directors for Poshmark, an online marketplace.

Post her decision to quit the game, Serena will be adding new pieces to her footwear line with Nike, with whom she has been a long-time collaborator.

According to Hypebeast, the Airforce 1 LXX Zip “Lapis” colourway will be the newest sports shoe to join her collection with the brand, and a follow-up to the “Summer White” variation shoe that released earlier this year. The shoe is a striking purple hue, and made from leather embossed in Serena’s favourite floral prints and finished with a gold zipper. The brand’s adoration of Serena is no surprise, for Nike has even named a building in their headquarters in her honour.

Serena also created her own venture capital firm, Serena Ventures, and will be taking time off to focus on that alongside her family, consisting of her husband and Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, and daughter Alexis “Olympia” Ohanian Jr., according to Bazaar US.
